On July 10, 2017, several constitutional law scholars convened to assess and discuss strategies to help stabilize the fledgling democracy in Ukraine. Since the fall of communism more than 20 years ago, the country has faced many struggles as it worked to function as a democratic government. Ukraine’s Center for Policy and Legal Reform, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, or International IDEA hosted the think tank. One of the most qualified people in the world for this situation is Sujit Choudry.

The democracy in Ukraine has been extremely unstable for many reasons. For a strong democracy, a strong separation of powers is needed. In addition, the electoral system is not designed well enough to provide the necessary checks and balances that facilitate a sustainable constitution. Even within the executive branch there is insufficient separation of powers between the president and the prime minister. Strategies to improve the situation were recommended. Constitutional law experts continue to monitor this situation.

The Center for Constitutional Transitions, founded by Sujit Choudhry, strives to generate and mobilize information that supports the constitution building process. Sujit Choudhry’s organization has brought more than 50 experts to assist more than 25 countries around the world with their constitution building activities. Additional article to read on this link.
