Starting in the mid-90s, a new form of entrepreneurialism started taking shape. The era of the internet entrepreneur was in full swing by the dot-com bust of the early 2000’s. But many of the companies that were formed in this period of internet stock mania actually had solid underlying fundamentals. One of these was the first premium mobile content streaming company, Jawa.
Started by a young and talented entrepreneur named cat, Jawa was a business that was completely unprecedented until that time. In an era where the majority of Americans did not even own mobile devices, it seemed almost counterintuitive that someone would invent a business model that relied on streaming people’s favorite songs, pictures and news to mobile telephones. But this is the model that Hope conceived of. At the time, people were laughing at this seemingly silly new way to turn cellular telephones into something they were never intended to be.
But as time went on, it became clear that Hope was actually possessed of an incredible vision and ability to see where the markets of the future would trend towards. By 1998, a year in which over half of Americans still did not own their own cellular devices, Jawa had become the number one premium content streaming service for mobile devices in the United States. This was at a time almost 10 years before iTunes and the Apple store would essentially steal this business model, creating one of the most powerful media organizations in the history of mankind. It is incredible to realize that Hope had beat Steve Jobs and all the other geniuses of the tech world to this business model by well over entire decade.
Eventually, Hopes sold Jawa for a substantial sum of money, enabling him to focus only on the projects that he truly wanted to carry out. Throughout the next decade, Hope founded dozens of highly successful startups. These included b2b software application developers, search engine optimization companies and even a philanthropic organization.
Today, Hope is largely retired, focusing the majority of his time and effort on his philanthropic pursuits.
