Sujit Choudhry Provides Recovery Options For Authoritarian Backsliding

Sujit Choudhry is taking a stand in regards to authoritarian backsliding. More specifically, Sujit Choudhry is tackling the issues in Hungary and Poland. Back on Dec. 18, Sujit Choudhry joined Michael Meyer-Resende and Mattias Kumm in a roundtable workshop to discuss the issue. An emphasis placed on the discussion was how to recover from authoritarian backsliding. Constitutional lawyers from Hungary and Poland attended the roundtable. There were also experts from the United States as well as other parts of Europe. Another main focus was to educate the lawyers on how their countries can make a turnaround.  Additional article on

Sujit Choudhry’s credentials are to thank for his ability to lead this charge. He earned bachelors degrees from McGill University, the University of Oxford, and the University of Toronto. In 1998, he earned his master of laws at Harvard Law School.  More to read on

Choudhry served as a law clerk for the Supreme Court of Canada in 1996. He then became an assistant professor of law at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. In 2011, Choudhry became the Cecelia Goetz professor of law at the New York University School of Law. He is currently the I. Michael Heyman professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley.

Despite his busy schedule, Choudhry is also a part of other ventures. He is an advisor to countries looking to rebuild their constitution process. Choudhry has a bevy of experience in this area, as he’s spoken to over 24 countries. He has even provided lectures. Some of these countries include Egypt and Libya. Choudhry has also been an advisor to Yemen, Nepal, and South Africa. On top of that, he is the director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions.
