Isn’t It Romantic Gives Rebel Wilson the Chance to Shine

Imagine if there was a land where every romantic comedy took place. Chance meetings with handsome strangers happen on the daily, everything is new and shiny, and serendipity is a way of life.

Such is the world featured in Rebel Wilson’s newest movie, Isn’t It Romantic. Wilson plays the lead, Natalie, a cynical architect who hates rom-coms. But after an encounter with a thief on the New York City subway, she hits her head and wakes up to find that she is the star in her very own romantic comedy. New York suddenly looks and smells better and her apartment is enormous and full of designer shoes.

Wilson has described this as Natalie’s “worst nightmare” and says that her characters spends the film trying to escape rom-com land. However, in true romantic comedy fashion, Natalie finds herself in the midst of a love triangle, featuring a handsome stranger named Blake (played by Liam Hemsworth) and her best friend Josh (played by Adam DeVine). To make matters more complex Josh is smitten with Priyanka Chopra’s character.

And to Natalie’s disappointment, the romantic comedy she stars in is rated PG-13, meaning that she can’t curse and things with Blake never go much further than a kiss.

The film is one of Wilson’s first leading roles. Previously she has provided comedic relief in Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids, and played the funny best friend in How To Be Single. Isn’t It Romantic will give Wilson the chance to shine on her own. The film is also notable for having a plus-sized lead, something quite rare in Hollywood. Wilson, who is from Australia, has spoken about the difficulties of breaking into Hollywood as an Australian and a plus-sized actress. “I think I’m one of the first comedy actors from Australia, to come bring my own style here. So that’s a bit different,” the actress has said.

Wilson maintains that being plus-sized has always been a benefit to her career. It made her different, and she is quoted as saying, “I wouldn’t ever want to compete with what I call ‘the glamours’ — the really gorgeous people. I’m about the brain, the heart and what’s on the inside. I feel really lucky to be the body type I am.”

Watch Wilson flaunt her talent, heart, and brain in Isn’t It Romantic, in theaters Valentine’s Day 2019.
