In 2011, Daniel Taub found himself in the highly unusual position of being named ambassador to the country where he was born. Though he was born in the UK, he has made his home in Israel and has had a long diplomatic career there.
Highlights of Taub’s public service include helping broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Taub’s UK connections were useful in that role; he traveled to Northern Ireland to learn about the peace process there. He was also involved in similar negotiations with Syria.
During his tenure as ambassador to the UK, Daniel Taub saw many successes. He and his wife were readily accepted into London’s Jewish community. His knowledge of British politics was very useful, and he sought to build bridges between the UK’s Labour Party and its counterpart in Israel. In doing this, he highlighted the similarities in the progressive agendas espoused by both parties.
Daniel Taub well understands Britain’s leadership in the worlds of both media and finance. He remains keen to see the relationship between Britain and Israel develop into something strong and lasting. He notes that Britain’s government takes anti-Semitic incidents seriously and always offers help to the British Jews when they need it.
A big part of his role was demystifying Israel for the British public. As an ambassador, he is a people person and enjoys discussions with people. Taub found the discussions he had with British people to be very productive. Some observers have said that Taub was the most popular Israeli diplomat in London since the 1980s.
Daniel Taub’s time as ambassador to the UK may have ended, but he still has ideas about world politics. He continues to keep an eye on Israel’s relationships with other countries in the Middle East. In addition to his diplomatic work, Taub is often sought out for his speaking abilities. With good humor and a lifetime of unique experiences, he finds it easy to captivate crowds.
Today, he is director of strategy and planning for the Yad Handiv Foundation. Taub is the proud father of six children with his wife, Zehava. He resides in Jerusalem.
